Larry Hagman and his wife Maj were married in 1954 and remain happily married fifty plus years later. She is his best friend and mother of his two children, Heidi and Preston. Larry and Maj live in Ojai, California about eighty miles from Los Angeles in a ten bedroom chalet. Larry and Maj share an avid interest in renewable energy and made an investment to make their home completely energy efficient. They are the owners of the largest residential solar array in America. This solar power system produces enough power for ten residences.
Prior to the installation of this solar power system, their
dependence on oil generated electricity for their forty-five acre
ranch was more than thirty-five thousand dollars a year. Once the
solar power system was installed, the bill went down to only
thirteen dollars. The cost for the system was seven hundred and
fifty thousand with a three-hundred thousand credit from the
electric company. Their house was featured on an episode of
“Planet’s Living Green with Ed.” He offered insights into making
homes more energy efficient.
One activity Larry was involved in is the BP Solar Neighborhood
program that provided solar power to several families in the Los
Angeles area. These families were provided solar power systems free
of charge. He has worked on alternative energy for third world
countries and a part of a program called Solar Electric Light Fund
(SELF) with the goal of making countries energy-self
sufficient.
At seventy-six, Larry began a blog in an effort to educate people
about renewable energy. Larry is a dedicated proponent to renewable
energy and takes an interest in biofuels and other alternative
energy sources. He is considered an expert on renewable energy and
has shared his knowledge at programs, meetings and forums
continuing to lobby for renewable energy.
